Leichhardt has some of the finest preserved Victorian streetscapes in the Inner West. Long rows of single and two-storey terraces from the 1880s-90s, tuckpointed brick, cast-iron lacework and sandstone detailing. These buildings need specialised care, and the wrong work can destroy their character.

Most of our Leichhardt work is tuckpointing and lime mortar repointing. Tuckpointing is a precise decorative technique that takes time to do properly — the dark base mortar, the white putty fillet run through the centre, matched to the original width and profile. Get it wrong and the facade looks off.

We also do sandstone restoration on steps, window surrounds and garden walls, brick replacement where bricks have decayed past saving, and chimney repairs. The whole point of a Leichhardt terrace is the detail — we keep it intact.

What Leichhardt homes and buildings need

Leichhardt is dominated by Victorian terraces from 1880-1900, with some Federation. Handmade soft brick with lime mortar, often originally tuckpointed. Iron lintels, sandstone sills and surrounds, decorative cast-iron lacework. Many terraces have been incorrectly repointed with cement in past decades. Heritage conservation applies to most streets.

Common Questions — Leichhardt

What exactly is tuckpointing and how is it different from normal pointing?

Tuckpointing is two materials applied in layers — a dark coloured mortar flush with the brick face, with a fine thin fillet of white lime putty run through the centre of each joint. It creates the illusion of very precise, very fine brickwork. Normal pointing is just one mortar filling the joint.

How do I know if my terrace originally had tuckpointing?

Look closely at the joints. If you can see traces of a thin white line running through dark mortar, or if the brickwork has a particularly refined look, it was probably tuckpointed originally. Most Victorian-era middle and upper-class terraces in Leichhardt were.

Can tuckpointing be done in sections or does the whole facade need doing?

It can be staged. We often do the front facade first, then sides and back as budget allows. Done in stages, it spreads the cost but the work still looks cohesive if we match the mix and profile consistently.
